Febuxostat is a medication used primarily to treat chronic gout and hyperuricemia (high levels of uric acid in the blood).
It works by inhibiting xanthine oxidase, an enzyme responsible for uric acid production.
Febuxostat is an alternative to allopurinol, especially for patients with kidney disease or those who cannot tolerate allopurinol.
Indications
- Chronic gout management
- Hyperuricemia in patients with gout
Dosage
Typically 40–80 mg once daily, adjusted based on uric acid levels
Common: Nausea, joint pain, liver enzyme abnormalities
Serious: Increased risk of cardiovascular events, liver toxicity, severe skin reactions
Cardiovascular Risk: Studies suggest febuxostat may increase the risk of heart-related death compared to allopurinol
Liver Monitoring: Regular liver function tests are recommended
Not for Asymptomatic Hyperuricemia: Used only for gout-related hyperuricemia
Severe liver disease
Patients with a history of severe hypersensitivity to febuxostat
Patients at high cardiovascular risk (should be used cautiously)
Drug Interactions:
Avoid use with azathioprine and mercaptopurine due to severe toxicity risk
