Modafinil is a medication that is used to promote wakefulness and treat various sleep disorders such as narcolepsy (a neurological disorder that causes excessive daytime sleepiness and sudden episodes of sleep)
Mechanism of action of modafinil is not fully understood but it is believed to work by affecting certain neurotransmitters in the brain, such as dopamine and norepinephrine. It is thought to increase the release of these neurotransmitters, which can enhance alertness and cognitive function.
Modafinil uses
Modafinil is also prescribed for other sleep-related conditions, such as:
- Shift Work Sleep Disorder: This is a sleep disorder that affects people who work non-traditional hours, disrupting their sleep-wake cycle.
- Obstructive Sleep Apnea: May be used as an adjunctive treatment to help alleviate the excessive sleepiness associated with this condition.
- Excessive Daytime Sleepiness: can be used in cases of idiopathic hypersomnia, a condition that is characterized by chronic excessive sleepiness without an obvious cause.
Kindly note that while modafinil can be effective in promoting wakefulness and reducing excessive sleepiness, it is not a substitute for proper sleep and should not be used as a recreational drug.
