Imiquimod is a drug that belongs to the class of medications known as immune response modifiers.

It is primarily used to treat certain skin conditions, including external genital warts (condyloma acuminatum), actinic keratosis (a precancerous skin condition), and superficial basal cell carcinoma (a type of skin cancer)

  • External genital warts-imiquimod helps to stimulate the immune response, leading to the destruction of the warts.
  • Actinic keratosis- it helps to induce an inflammatory response, leading to the shedding of abnormal skin cells.
  • superficial basal cell carcinoma- imiquimod activates the immune system to target and eliminate cancerous cells.

Directions:

A thin layer of the cream is applied with the fingers to wart; the cream is massaged gently into the affected areas until no longer no longer visible. occlusive dressings or wrappings should not be used.

Apply 3 times a week (for up to 16wks) for external genital and perianal warts.

5 times per week for superficial basal cell carcinoma

2 times a week for actinic keratoses
