Doctors also use Ritalin to treat narcolepsy in adults. This sleep disorder causes extreme daytime drowsiness and sudden sleep episodes, making it hard for individuals to stay awake. They may fall asleep suddenly, disrupting daily routines.

Symptoms of narcolepsy include:

  • Excessive daytime sleepiness
  • Inappropriate sleep episodes
  • Sudden loss of voluntary muscle control

Ritalin or Methylphenidate Dosage

  • Daily doses should not exceed 60 mg.
  • If symptoms fail to improve after a month of dose adjustments, doctors discontinue the medication.
  • If symptoms worsen or adverse effects occur, doctors reduce the dosage or stop the treatment altogether.

Ritalin or Methylphenidate Side Effects

  • Headache
  • Aggressive behavior, irritability, or depression

  • Decreased appetite (usually temporary)
  • Dry mouth

Nervousness and insomnia frequently occur at the start of treatment but typically improve when doctors lower the dosage or omit afternoon and evening doses. Nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain often appear early in treatment and may subside with food intake.
